The family team at Berry Smith is supporting Family Mediation Week 2025, which takes place between Monday, 27th and Friday, 31st January, with the aim of raising awareness of the benefits of mediation within the family justice system.
On Day 4 of Family Mediation Week 2025, we look at how mediation can help with complex financial arrangements.
Financial matters are often one of the most contentious aspects of family disputes. Families may feel anxious about the future, uncertain about how they will make ends meet, or concerned about protecting their hard-earned investments. Financial matters often carry emotional weight, adding to the challenges when trying to discuss and decide on the future.
Mediation offers an effective way to navigate these challenges. With family mediators experienced in handling complex financial arrangements, we can guide families through identifying available financial resources and exploring arrangements that allow constructive and productive decision-making.
In financial mediation, we use tools and processes similar to those employed by the Family Court and legal professionals to assess financial resources, such as housing, businesses, and investment portfolios. We also collaborate with other professionals, such as accountants, financial advisors, and pension actuaries, where necessary.
Our mediators employ strategies such as reality testing proposed outcomes, helping families assess the practicality of their solutions, and emphasising long-term planning to ensure agreements are sustainable.
If you would like to discuss whether mediation or any other alternative dispute resolution should be considered in your specific case, or you need advice on any other family law matter, please do not hesitate to contact the family team by email at family@berrysmith.com or by telephone on either 02920 345511 or 01656 645525.
